The Fox & the Crab and Other Stories is a collection of fairy tales and nursery rhymes for children, and it represents an effort to recover and disseminate a small sample of the abundant works originally published in Spanish language newspapers in the United States from the end of the 19th to the first half of the 20th century. As part of an expansive historical and literary body, this book is an example of a meaningful heritage tradition rooted mainly in Mexican culture, assuring the continuity of language, traditions and ways of experiencing the world. These stories and poems originally written in Spanish reflect common aesthetic norms and linguistic practices of that specific historical period. Accordingly, during the translation process a considerable effort was made into preserving the literary expression of that period. At the same time, and in some instances, there were vocabulary, word order and punctuation adaptations to smooth out and make the reading more enjoyable and accessible to today’s young readers. More than ever in our modern world, it is essential for children to experience and acquire the ability to communicate across cultures and to expand their social and emotional skills. Reading works such as these, plays a role in the development of a confident, sensitive and empowered child. In a broader context, this collection intends to gather the voice of our ancestors and strengthen the presence of a living culture across geographical, temporal, and linguistic borders.

La Zorra & el Cangrejo y otros cuentos es una colección de fábulas y poemas dirigida a los niños y representa un intento por rescatar y diseminar una pequeña muestra de obras originalmente publicadas en periódicos editados en español en los Estados Unidos desde fines del siglo XIX hasta la primera mitad del siglo XX. Como parte de un amplio cuerpo histórico y literario, el libro ejemplifica una significativa herencia arraigada principalmente en la cultura mexicana asegurando la continuidad de la lengua, tradiciones y maneras de conocer el mundo. Estos cuentos y poemas escritos originalmente en español reflejan las normas estéticas y las prácticas lingüísticas de su respectivo período histórico. Por consiguiente, en el proceso de traducción se ha hecho un considerable esfuerzo por preservar al máximo la forma de expresión literaria de esa época. A la misma vez, en algunas instancias se han realizado cambios de vocabulario, orden de palabras y puntuación para facilitar, amenizar la lectura, y hacerla más asequible al joven lector moderno. Más que nunca en nuestro mundo moderno es imprescindible que los niños vivan y adquieran la capacidad de comunicarse a través de culturas y de ampliar su destreza social y emocional. La lectura de obras como las que se presentan aquí, contribuye al desarrollo de un ser confiado, sensible y empoderado. En un contexto más amplio, esta colección recoge las voces de nuestros ancestros y fortalece la presencia de una cultura viva a través de fronteras geográficas, temporales y lingüísticas.
