Introducing the IRISE Bornstein-Gomez & Somoza Rising Scholars Pilot Program:
The Interdisciplinary Research Institute for the Study of (In)Equality (IRISE), the Critical Race and Ethnic Studies (CRES) Minor, and the Cultural Center have been awarded a 4-D Infusion Grant to support aspiring graduate scholars at the University of Denver. The program is named after Miriam Bornstein-Gomez and Oscar U. Somoza, who were among the first tenured Latinx professors at DU and beloved for their advocacy and mentorship of DU students. Through this collaborative effort, we will leverage three of the four dimensions of student success: Advancing Intellectual Growth, Purposeful Careers and Lives, and Exploring Character) in our broader collective effort to diversify higher education and its areas of engagement and research. This program is designed to nurture and develop the skills, experience, and ultimate interest of undergraduate students pursuing interdisciplinary scholarly research related to racial inequality. With a particular focus on minority students, the goal of the pilot program is to create a pipeline of DU undergraduates fully prepared to enter and succeed in degree-granting programs at DU and beyond as the next innovative generation of interdisciplinary scholars on inequality. For more information about the program, please contact lynda.duran@du.edu.
